MCU Helps Honor Students from Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music Go To State Finals

Six talented students from the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music will be going upstate to participate in the NYS All-State concert series made possible in part by a donation from the Municipal Credit Union.  In a presentation ceremony on Wednesday, October 7th at Celia Cruz H.S of Music, MCU donated $10,000 to be used in part to enable students who have been selected to travel and participate in prestigious All-State ensembles.  Those ensembles will be a part of the All-State Concert series which will take place in Rochester, N.Y., in December.

The Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music was started in 2003 and currently enrolls 348 students. The school was founded to create an environment where each student has the opportunity to focus on learning while nurturing their individual musical talents. The school’s concept was developed by its Principal, Dr. William Rodriguez, an accomplished pianist and Grammy Award Winner. Celia Cruz High School of Music’s combination of music and college-preparatory courses has earned the school recognition and distinction. It is worth noting that the school’s six All-State winners represent almost one-third of the students selected from all NYC high schools to participate. Some of its first graduates are currently attending Julliard, Boston’s Berklee College of Music, and other outstanding institutions.

At the presentation Dr. Rodriguez commented, “MCU truly understands the importance of music in the lives of students and the unique needs of a school like ours. On behalf of our students, faculty and parents, I thank Municipal Credit Union for its generous donation”.  Celia Cruz High School of Music is on the Walton Educational Campus, located at 2780 Reservoir Avenue in the Bronx.

This support of Celia Cruz High School of Music is a part of Municipal Credit Union’s commitment to metro area youth. MCU supports a number of initiatives that focus on the education of our young people, and has a widening program that brings financial literacy into the classroom.  Each year, the credit union awards $62,000 in scholarships to college bound students, and it also helped the debate team from the Bronx School for Law, Government & Justice go to the national finals earlier this year. Municipal CU also partners with Brass Media Inc. an organization that fosters financial literacy in high school students and young adults.

“We are delighted to help these talented and deserving students,” commented Kam Wong, MCU president/CEO.  “Municipal Credit Union is committed to our community and our youth. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever to recognize individual effort and achievement,” continued Mr. Wong. “We must invest in our youth to help insure our future.”
