April 6, 2010, Uniondale NY -- There was plenty of action at the 37th annual FDNY/NYPD hockey game played on March 27th at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. This annual contest, an anchor event in the 2010 MCU Sports Series, was taken by the FDNY Bravest team 10 to 7 over the NYPD Finest squad. The game was both fast paced and exciting, and the stadium was filled with over 13,500 enthusiastic fans cheering on their teams. While festive in mood, these sports competitions also serve a serious cause--to raise funds for the children and widows of civil servants who have made the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty. These fallen heroes and their surviving family members are honored before the game, and MCU donated $10,000 to the New York Police and Firefighters Widows' and Children's Fund during the opening ceremonies.
"We are delighted to sponsor these important events again this year," said Kam Wong, MCU President/CEO. "They are great games and a great day out for city employees and their families. The NYPD and the FDNY serve and protect us every day, and MCU will always be here to support them and the causes they serve." In addition to sponsoring the events onsite, MCU helps promote them in their monthly statements, on its website, and with its media partners.
Sponsorship of these sporting events is part of MCU's initiative to get its staff and services out where its members live and play. As teams clash for a cause, MCU staffers are in the wings, visible and available to answer questions and provide information about services to members and potential members.
Other events in the MCU Sports Series include games between the FDNY and NYPD football teams planned for May 23rd at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, and the NYPD/FDNY baseball game scheduled for July 30th. This year's baseball game between NYPD's Finest and the FDNY's Bravest takes on a new significance for MCU because it will be played at the newly named MCU Park in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
MCU will also sponsor other games played by teams from the Department of Sanitation and other member groups in 2010.
