Municipal Credit Union Announces 2017 Scholarship Winners

Continuing its support of higher education among young people throughout the New York area, Municipal Credit Union honored its 2017 memorial scholarship winners at a special reception help at the MCU Corporate Office on Thursday, June 8. This year, the credit union awarded a total of $66,000 in scholarships to college-bound graduating high school seniors: eight memorial scholarship grants of $5,000 each and 13 grants of $2,000 each.

“Our scholarship winners are exceptional young men and women who exemplify our credit union values through their drive, dedication to education and commitment to community service,” said MCU President/CEO Kam Wong as he addressed the memorial scholarship winners and their families. “I am very proud that our scholarship program is able to support these inspiring young people as they pursue the higher education that will help them to achieve goals and realize new dreams.”

Members of MCU’s senior management team, Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee additionally attended the reception to recognize the memorial scholarship winners.

“MCU’s accomplishments throughout the past century have been great,” said Board Chair James Durrah. “However, I can honestly say they would mean very little if we weren’t able to give back to our members in the credit union tradition of “People Helping People. Our annual scholarship program is one of these socially responsible initiatives that I am most proud of, as we are able to empower the youth who seek to use higher education to create a better tomorrow.”

This year’s scholarship winners were selected based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community service and involvement, letters of recommendation, and an essay expressing personal goals. The scholarships are part of MCU’s long-standing, larger corporate commitment to youth education across the greater New York City area.

“For the past twenty-two years, this program has been able to help hundreds of students realize their educational dreams with almost one million dollars in scholarships and awards,” said MCU Secretary to the Board Caroll Duncanson who oversaw the 2017 Municipal Credit Union Scholarship Program. I’d like to speak for everybody here when I say that we are very proud to continue this long-standing tradition.”
