MCU Hikes the Hill at 2017 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

MCU joined fellow credit union leaders in “hiking the hill” as they met with policy makers in order to discuss important current legislation currently affecting credit union members at the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. held throughout the week of February 26, 2017.

Members of the Municipal Credit Union Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee and staff met with legislators including Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Jose Serrano, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congressman Adriano Espaillat, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. During these meetings they advocated for key legislative priorities that would improve the lives of the more than 105 million credit union members, including regulatory relief, data security and preserving the credit union tax status.

“I am very proud to be a part of the more than 5000 volunteers who participated in the 2017 Government Affairs conference." said MCU Board Chair James Durrah who was among those who hiked the hill. "Together as a movement we are confidently and responsibly working with our elected legislators as we continue to advocate for the financial safety and security our members and their families.”

In addition to meeting with legislators, MCU received a National Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award from CUNA in recognition of its Financially Fit Program. The Desjardins recognition program considers all activities supporting the personal finance education of members and non-members and financial literacy leadership efforts.
