MCU Honored at the 2016 NY Credit Union Association Convention

Municipal Credit Union received several honors, including recognition for its 100th year of service, for its longstanding commitment to its members and the credit union movement during the 2016 Annual Meeting and Convention, held June 16-19 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

In addition to being recognized for its 100th year of service, MCU received the New York Credit Union Association’s prestigious statewide Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award in the asset category of more than $1 billion and will now advance to the Credit Union National Association’s national competition. The award follows MCU’s bolstered efforts to provide our members with the products and services that will continue to empower our members.

In 2015, the credit union developed a free, interactive seminar series that could be presented in various adult-learning environments. MCU provided participants with worksheets, situational analyses, budgeting tools and takeaway materials that allowed seminar attendees to be actively involved in the presentations. Each seminar was specifically tailored to audience size, which ranged from 15 to 250 attendees. MCU also provided anyone who attended one of the “Financially Fit” seminars with a personal financial consultation.

"We’re very proud to receive the Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award from the New York Credit Union Association," said MCU President/CEO Kam Wong. “MCU has always prided itself in meeting our members’ changing needs and educating them on taking control of their finances, and this program is one of most effective ways we are empowering our members."

Additionally, late MCU Board Member James McKeon was inducted into the Credit Union Hall of Fame during the NYCUA’s 2016 Meeting and Convention. The Hall of Fame honors individuals who have devoted their lives to the philosophy and success of the credit union movement, and who have made a significant impact on credit unions at the local, state or national levels.

“We're very pleased that the New York Credit Union Association has recognized James McKeon with this great honor," Mr. Wong said. "James McKeon was an integral part of MCU’s leadership for many years and helped us grow and better serve our members. His demonstrated commitment to the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people' was truly significant and this recognition is well deserved.”

During his nearly 30 years on the board, McKeon—who passed away in 2012— served as both treasurer and assistant treasurer, as well as chairman of the Bylaws Committee and a member of the Election Committee.
