BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, October 19, 2018: On Thursday, October 18, 2018 Municipal Credit Union (MCU) joined the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and Interfaith Medical Center in recognizing NYPD Transit District 30 officers Charles Edwards and Damion Graham, as well as the Interfaith Emergency Medical Team for saving the life of one-year-old Amir Nieves after he began suffering life-threatening seizures on a subway platform. As part of recognizing these exceptional individuals, a special reception was hosted at Interfaith Medical Center where the officers and Interfaith Medical Center Emergency Medical Team received plaques of appreciation.

“We’re very proud to thank and recognize Officers Edwards and Graham and the IMC Emergency Department staff, whose quick thinking and life-saving maneuvers saved Amir Nieves,” said Municipal Credit Union Acting President/CEO Norman Kohn. “Their actions truly embody what it means to be an everyday hero in our communities and remind us of all of the incredible work done by our local hospital staff and NYPD in order to keep New Yorkers safe, healthy and inspired. I’d like to personally thank these outstanding individuals for the work they do each day.”

Amir was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center by EMS services in Stuyvesant Heights after he stopped breathing while travelling with his father on the downtown C train. NYPD Officers Charles Edwards and Damion Graham arrived at the Franklin Avenue Train Station and began performing chest compressions on the toddler while waiting for a medical unit to arrive. Realizing the toddler needed immediate medical attention, the officers rushed Amir to the hospital themselves, ultimately saving his life.

“Thanks to the quick thinking and training of officers Edwards and Graham as well as the work of our Interfaith Medical Center Emergency Department team a precious life was saved,” said LaRay Brown President and CEO of Interfaith Medical Center and One Brooklyn Health. “Inspiring acts like this remind us that we live in a city serviced by the best public servants and healthcare professionals. Today, we honor and thank those selfless heroes who embody the values we all strive for as members of this community.”

The ceremony honored the police officers, Interfaith Medical Center Emergency Department, and all of the everyday heroes who keep New Yorkers safe and healthy every day. Attendees of the reception, co-hosted by the Municipal Credit Union and the NYPD, included Interfaith Medical Center and One Brooklyn Health President and CEO LaRay Brown, District 30 Commanding Officer Captain Darius White, representatives from Municipal Credit Union, and representatives from the offices of New York City Council Member for the 36th District Robert Cornegy, and New York State Assembly Member of the 56th District Tremaine Wright.
