Keep Your Accounts Secure in a Digital World: Password Best Practices

Passwords are the first line of defense in protecting your financial information. Despite this, weak or reused passwords remain one of the most common ways cyber criminals gain access to personal accounts. At Municipal Credit Union, we care about your security and want to help you protect what matters most.

Why Do Strong, Unique Passwords Matter?
When you reuse passwords across multiple sites, a breach at one company can put your accounts everywhere at risk. Cyber criminals often use stolen usernames and passwords to try to access financial accounts, emails, and shopping apps. This is a tactic known as “credential stuffing”.

What Makes a Password Strong?
A strong password should be:
  • Long – At least 12 characters.
  • Complex – A mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Unique – Used only for one account.
Examples of strong passwords:
  • CoffeeTime!2025$
  • Sunny_Day#17!Go
  • GreenTurtle#98^Hi

Avoid using personal information like names, birthdates, or favorite sports teams.

Bonus Tip: Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Whenever possible, add an extra layer of protection by enabling MFA on your accounts. This way, even if your password is compromised, attackers can’t access your account without the second factor (like a one-time code sent to your phone).

Your Security is Our Priority
We encourage you to review your online accounts today and update any weak or reused passwords. If you have any questions or need help, our team is here for you.
